Northern Colorado Newborn Photographer

Does it feel like summer is just flying by to anyone else? Maybe it’s just the craziness that we call June – between birthday parties, dance recitals, swim lessons, and the general business of every day life, the days are passing by more quickly than I would like. It feels like I blink, and another week has passed by. Our little family sure is enjoying the summer here in Northern Colorado, though. The weather has been lovely, and when the thunderstorms don’t interfere with an evening portrait session, I can’t get enough of them!

Speaking of busy, I’ve had a rush of newborns recently, and several more mamas-to-be who are due in July. I need to blog their sessions before it’s time to introduce their new little ones to the world! In the meantime, I wanted to share a favorite image from a recent session. This little man was 7 days new, and such a cute little peanut! I have so many more favorites from his newborn session here in Northern Colorado that I can’t wait to share, but I had to post this li’l sneak peek for you in the meantime. This new basket is one of my favorites with my wood backdrop and floor drop – the warm tones make me happy.:)

In Home Newborn Portraits in Fort Collins

Oh, Avery. Where do I even begin. I know I say every session is a favorite, but this in home newborn portrait session is definitely at the top of my list. Baby girl was gorgeous, slept pretty darn well (she had to take a couple of feeding breaks, but most babies do), and her parents are absolutely lovely!

Avery’s mama had a rough time after delivery, and asked if we could reschedule the session, so she was a little older than your average newborn at the time of the session. Mama mentioned afterwards that she almost cancelled rather than reschedule (she sent me a lovely email after our session telling me how glad she was that she didn’t cancel) and I’m SO glad that we went through with the portraits!

So, on a snowy afternoon, I arrived at their beautiful home in Fort Collins. Avery’s mom had chosen a few favorite props from my portfolio, and we decided to skip the traditional beanbag poses and go straight for the bucket and crate poses that she loved. I’m thrilled  with the color combinations we came up with for Avery’s newborn portraits – they compliment her beautiful complexion so well. And I love a baby who can rock a yellow wrap!

After the posed images in the buckets (we took advantage of the gorgeous, diffused light filtering in from the back door and windows), we headed upstairs for some fun lifestyle images. It’s so much fun to be able to capture a combination of simple posed images along with lifestyle images with mom and dad. It really helps tell the full story of life with a newborn.
I love love LOVE a (happy) bright-eyed newborn. Those serious “old soul” gazes melt my heart. Every. Single. Time.

Towards the end of the session, Avery started to fuss, and daddy took her into the nursery to settle her. This gave her mom and I the opportunity to chat about Avery’s birth story. Life with a newborn isn’t always easy, and we comiserated about the challenges of those first few weeks with a newborn. We really connected during that talk. It’s SO nice to feel like you’re not alone when you’re struggling with sleepless nights and a bit more fussiness than you’re expecting in that first little while – especially when all the magazine articles and mommy blogs talk about the blissful experience of being a new mom and things maybe just aren’t quite as easy (albeit still amazing, and incredible, and beautiful and life-altering). Life with a newborn is far from perfect or easy, but it DOES get better. And once you see that first smile on your baby’s face, it all feels worthwhile. After a while, we realized we’d been talking longer than we expected, so we tiptoed into the nursery and found daddy asleep in the rocking chair with his baby girl fast asleep on his chest – talk about a heart-melting moment!

Avery’s daddy is a big fan of the website “Chive,” and he requested a few poses in their Chive shirts at the end of the session. I love a dad with a sense of humor, and what’s cuter than a sleeping baby in a kelly green onesie with Bill Murray in the background?;)

The snow continued throughout our session, and there was a good 8 inches on the ground (and road) by the time the car was loaded back up with props, blankets, and lighting equipment. To say it was a scary drive home (note: don’t buy a crossover vehicle without all wheel drive) would be an understatement (I almost got stuck on the frontage road trying to get to the main road, because there was a hill with a sharp incline), but I made it home safely and ended up with too many favorite images from one session. I can’t wait to meet with this sweet family again and see how much their little girl has grown up.

Allison ~ Fort Collins In Home Newborn Portraits

Sweet baby Allison melted my heart from the moment I met her. That hair! And those gorgeous blue eyes and long eyelashes! She’s going to break some hearts when she gets older.

Allison’s family recently moved here from out of state, so she was a little bit older when I met her for her newborn session at her family’s home in Fort Collins, CO. She was actually about 4 weeks old on the day of her session. She had moments of alertness (and perfect eye contact with the camera), but after getting a nice full tummy, she slept for a majority of the session.

Henry was such a proud big brother, and posed nicely for a few images with baby sister. He was a typical busy, inquisitive 3-year-old, and asked me all about my lights and great big soft box. After lying still for portraits, he was ready for a snack, and playing legos with daddy. I had to snap a few images of them playing together, of course!

Miss Allison had such gorgeous coloring, which gave me the chance to play around with some bolder colors for her newborn portraits. I absolutely love how she photographed on the green backdrop, but I love the blue and yellow setup, as well. And blue and purple is one of my all-time favorite color combinations. I’m transitioning towards a more neutral/organic color scheme for most of my images, but sometimes it’s fun to play with color.

Lifestyle Newborn Twin Session Fort Collins

When Dani contacted me about photographing her newborn twins at their home in Fort Collins, they were already 3.5 weeks old, and my schedule was fully booked. I couldn’t bear the thought of passing up on newborn twins (!!), so I moved some things around on my calendar, and I was able to photograph her beautiful babies when they were a little over 4 weeks old.

Babies are much more alert after about 2 weeks of age, so I recommended that we do more of a lifestyle newborn session rather than a posed newborn session. I brought along a small container of wraps and headbands, but left my lights and props at home. Photographing a true lifestyle session was so amazing, and absolutely freeing. The entire focus of the session was on this wonderful young couple and the two adorable babies they had just brought into the world. It was all about the emotion, and the love, and just being in the moment rather than coordinating wraps with headbands and blankets with hats (although I love me a posed newborn session, too). When I was going through these images during my editing process, I was a little overwhelmed by the joy that is so apparent on mama and daddy’s faces – it’s that beautiful, raw emotion that makes me truly love being a newborn photographer.

This blog post is going to be rather image heavy. I really wanted to share the full session with you to help tell the entire story of their afternoon with me. We started our session juggling between the two babies – one would sleep while the other was awake, and I had a chance to capture each little one individually with mama and daddy. After a while, they finally slept at the same time, so I took them upstairs to take advantage of the beautiful natural light in the master bedroom. Dani specifically requested the “foot” pose after seeing it in my galleries, and luckily, the babies were accommodating.:)

If you are an expectant parent in the Fort Collins area, I would love to chat with you about photographing your newborn session – either lifestyle or posed. Newborn photography is my passion, and I would be honored to help you capture this fleeting time in your baby’s life.

sarah - Shallyse,
I have always loved your work, but this is one of my favorite of your newborn sessions! Such beautiful images. I think these parents will look back and treasure these, maybe even more so than if they had done more posed ones.

Lakelee – Northern Colorado Newborn Photographer

I’m so excited to share this lifestyle newborn session with you. Miss Lakelee was an absolute dream to photograph, and her mama and daddy’s home is a perfect treasure trove of vintage and antique items that were ideal to use as newborn props. The light was absolutely lovely in just about every room of their home, and I was seriously in heaven while photographing her newborn session.

This beautiful cradle has been in the family for a long time, and mom and dad requested that I use it for part of the session. I was more than happy to oblige. The warm color of the wood and the sweet floral bedding created such a pretty, feminine look that I just adore. I love love LOVE how she sleeps with her arms above her head!

This gorgeous bassinet has also been in the family for generations. And these little bonnets are all the rage right now, but this one is a genuine family antique that mama provided for the session.

This pretty little table? Yep, another antique! I think it’s so neat when the props used in a session mean something special to the family.

I can’t get over the gorgeous color scheme in the nursery. Gray is kinda my thing right now. I’m trying to find a dresser like that so that I can paint it in a similar fashion – LOVE IT!!!

And who can resist close-up shots of those tiny little hands and feet?

And pretty little pink diaper covers?

We made sure that mama and daddy participated in the session, as well. This little girl will definitely know how much she’s loved when she looks at these images.

Mary - Ah I love these! That cradle is suuuuuper sweet.
